Ashton is active in labor and civic affairs, including previously serving as the executive vice president of the Pennsylvania AFLCIO Executive Council and executive vice president of the New Jersey AFLCIO. Under the terms of the Stockholders Agreement among some of GM?s largest stockholders, which is described on page 34, Mr. Ashton was designated for nomination to the GM Board by the UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust, where he is a member of the Financial Committee. During his career with the UAW, Mr. Ashton played a key role in organizing campaigns and contract negotiations with major manufacturing and technology companies in a variety of industries including vehicle components, defense, aerospace, steel, and marine products
